Brewers Rally From Four Runs Down to Take 2-0 World Series Lead Over Rays

Milwaukee erased a 4-0 deficit to beat Tampa Bay 5-4 and take a 2-0 lead in the 2026 World Series.

The Milwaukee Brewers came back from a four-run first-inning deficit to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4 on Saturday night, taking a 2-0 lead in the World Series. Rookie Cooper Pratt delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning, completing a personal recovery after his early throwing error contributed to Tampa Bay’s fast start.

Milwaukee’s bullpen produced six scoreless innings, giving the offense enough time to erase the deficit and putting the Brewers two wins away from the first championship in franchise history.

Tampa Bay scored four in the first

The Rays immediately pressured Milwaukee’s defense and took advantage of mistakes to build a 4-0 lead.

For a home team already leading the series, the opening inning could have changed the momentum of the entire World Series.

Milwaukee responded before the game got away

The Brewers cut the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the first, preventing Tampa Bay from settling into complete control.

That immediate response kept the crowd engaged and gave Milwaukee’s bullpen a realistic game to protect.

The bullpen changed the match

Milwaukee relievers combined for six scoreless innings, shutting down a Rays lineup that had looked dangerous early.

JoJo Romero, Dustin May and DL Hall each contributed clean innings, while Abner Uribe recorded four outs.

Sal Frelick tied it with a home run

Frelick’s 408-foot solo homer in the sixth inning tied the game at 4-4.

The swing completed Milwaukee’s comeback and shifted pressure back onto Tampa Bay’s bullpen.

Pratt redeemed himself in the seventh

Brice Turang doubled to open the seventh and advanced on a fly ball. Pratt then greeted reliever Kevin Kelly with an RBI single to right field.

The hit mattered even more because Pratt’s early defensive error had contributed to Tampa Bay’s four-run opening inning.

Milwaukee’s relief staff has been a postseason weapon

The Brewers’ bullpen has now earned eight wins during the postseason, matching the 2015 Kansas City Royals for the most relief wins in a single postseason.

That depth allows manager Pat Murphy to shorten games once Milwaukee reaches the middle innings.

Aaron Ashby closed the door

Ashby recorded his third postseason save and has not allowed a run in 15 2/3 playoff innings.

That level of reliability gives Milwaukee confidence even when games enter the ninth inning with only a one-run lead.

Tampa Bay came close in the ninth

The Rays put the potential tying run at third base but could not bring it home.

That missed opportunity will be particularly painful because the series now shifts to Florida with Tampa Bay already two games behind.

Game 3 becomes critical

Teams that fall behind 3-0 in a best-of-seven series face an enormous historical disadvantage. That makes Monday’s Game 3 effectively a must-win situation for the Rays.

Returning home may help, but Tampa Bay must find a way to score against Milwaukee’s bullpen after the early innings.

Milwaukee is winning in different ways

The Brewers did not need a dominant starting performance or an early lead. They survived mistakes, relied on relief pitching and found timely offense.

That versatility is often what separates championship teams in October. Milwaukee now has a 2-0 advantage and control of the series, while Tampa Bay must respond quickly to prevent the World Series from slipping away.

History now favours Milwaukee

Teams that win the first two games of a best-of-seven championship series hold a substantial historical advantage, particularly when both victories come at home. The Brewers have protected that advantage without playing flawless baseball, which may be the most encouraging part of their position. They have absorbed defensive mistakes and early deficits without losing control of the series.

Tampa Bay still has a path back because the next games are at home, where matchups and crowd energy can change quickly. But the Rays need to convert early offense into full-game control. Another late collapse would leave them facing an almost impossible deficit and allow Milwaukee to manage its pitching staff with far greater flexibility.

Milwaukee will also try to avoid complacency. A 2-0 series lead is powerful but not decisive, and postseason momentum can change quickly after one dominant pitching performance. Game 3 will show whether Tampa Bay can turn the series back into a contest.
