Detroit Red Wings Suspend Dylan Larkin Without Pay as Trade Standoff Deepens

The Detroit Red Wings suspended former captain Dylan Larkin without pay after he said he would not play for the team while seeking a trade.

The Detroit Red Wings have suspended former captain Dylan Larkin without pay after the forward informed the organization he would no longer play for the team. The move, announced Thursday, deepened a trade dispute that had been building since Larkin asked to leave Detroit in the offseason.

Team confirms the suspension

Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said Larkin’s representative notified the Red Wings that the player did not intend to report. Detroit then imposed an unpaid suspension while continuing to explore potential trades.

Horcoff expressed disappointment with the decision and said any trade must make sense for the team as well as receive the necessary approval from Larkin. The announcement means a deal is not guaranteed, even though both sides appear to be looking for a path forward.

A complicated breakup with a longtime captain

Larkin, 30, had spent his NHL career with the Red Wings and served as captain beginning in January 2021. Detroit removed him from that role in September, starting the new season without a captain.

The former captain had requested a trade earlier in the year, but a suitable arrangement had not emerged. A player’s contract rights, the number of interested teams and the asset return Detroit seeks all affect what the club can realistically accomplish.

Detroit wins without Larkin

Despite the disruption, the Red Wings defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 on Thursday night. Viktor Arvidsson recorded a hat trick and an assist, while Lucas Raymond also scored. Detroit’s performance showed the team was able to produce a strong result amid the uncertainty.

Coach Todd McLellan had already announced that Larkin would not play against Chicago before the formal suspension became public. The news shifted the focus from routine lineup management to the wider dispute over the player’s future.

Why the next steps matter

The Red Wings must weigh the value of moving Larkin against the cost of accepting an unfavorable trade. Other teams considering a deal must examine his contract, roster fit and what assets Detroit would demand in return.

There has been no confirmed destination for the forward. Until the team announces a trade or another resolution, the suspension leaves one of Detroit’s most recognizable players outside the lineup.
