Borr Drilling Rig Sinks Off Gabon, Leaving One Dead and Four Missing

Borr Drilling’s Prospector 5 rig sank off Gabon after losing stability during preload operations, leaving one worker dead and four missing.

An offshore drilling rig operated by Borr Drilling sank off Gabon late Saturday, leaving one worker dead and four people missing, according to people familiar with the incident and company statements cited by Reuters. The Prospector 5 jack-up rig lost stability during preload operations near the Dussafu Marin permit area off Mayumba. Search-and-rescue teams continued working as Gabonese authorities opened a technical investigation.

The incident occurred before drilling began

The rig had been contracted to support BW Energy’s offshore operations but had not yet started drilling at the site.

Preload operations are designed to test the seabed and stabilize a jack-up rig before full drilling activity begins.

A “punch-through” is the leading preliminary explanation

Borr Drilling said early indications pointed to a punch-through event. That occurs when one or more rig legs suddenly penetrate a weak layer of seabed sediment.

If the movement is uneven, the platform can tilt rapidly and lose structural stability.

Most personnel were rescued

There were 115 people aboard the rig. Most were evacuated or rescued, but one employee was confirmed dead and four remained missing in the initial reporting.

The missing personnel included Gabonese workers and at least one expatriate.

Gabon activated a crisis response

The government established a crisis unit and deployed naval support to the area. Search operations continued around the site and along nearby waters.

Authorities also ordered a technical investigation into the cause of the accident.

Production in the area was halted

Operations around the affected offshore area were suspended while the situation was assessed.

Temporary shutdowns are common after major offshore incidents because operators must confirm structural, environmental and safety conditions.

No major pollution release was initially reported

Authorities said there was no confirmed discharge of harmful substances in the immediate aftermath.

Pollution-response teams remained on standby because the sinking occurred near environmentally sensitive coastline and Mayumba National Park.

Jack-up rigs depend heavily on seabed conditions

Unlike floating rigs, jack-up platforms lower long legs to the seafloor and raise the working deck above the water.

That design provides stability in shallow water but makes accurate geotechnical assessment of the seabed essential.

The accident could affect regional drilling schedules

Prospector 5 is part of a global fleet of high-value offshore assets. Losing a rig can delay drilling campaigns and increase insurance and replacement costs.

Operators may also review similar sites for seabed risk before continuing work.

Offshore safety will face renewed scrutiny

The industry has improved emergency procedures significantly after past offshore disasters, but structural incidents remain dangerous because they can develop within minutes.

Evacuation planning, crew drills and real-time monitoring are critical when a platform begins to list.

Insurance exposure could be substantial

A modern jack-up rig can be worth hundreds of millions of dollars when construction, equipment and contractual value are considered.

The financial impact will depend on insurance coverage, the condition of the asset and the length of any operational disruption.

Search operations remain the immediate priority

Commercial and regulatory questions will come later. For now, the focus remains on locating the missing workers and supporting the families of those affected.

The technical investigation will need to determine whether the cause was seabed failure, operational error, equipment failure or a combination of factors.

The accident may trigger fleet-wide checks

When a jack-up suffers a suspected punch-through, operators often revisit geotechnical data and preload procedures at other fields with similar seabed conditions. Regulators may request additional surveys before allowing comparable operations to continue. Even rigs that were not involved in the accident can therefore face delays while companies reassess risk.

For Borr Drilling, the immediate financial effect will depend on whether Prospector 5 is considered a total loss and how insurance responds. Contractual obligations to BW Energy and replacement-rig availability will also influence the final cost.

Environmental monitoring will continue even if no major spill was detected immediately. A sunken rig can contain fuel, lubricants and other materials that may leak over time. Gabon’s authorities and the operators will need to track the site, recover debris where possible and determine whether containment or salvage work is required near the protected coastline.

The investigation will also examine whether seabed surveys accurately reflected conditions at the preload location and whether the rig responded as designed when the instability began. Those findings could lead to changes in operating procedures across similar offshore projects.
