UPS Raises 2026 Outlook as Higher-Margin Shipments Improve Profitability

UPS raised its full-year profit and revenue forecasts after third-quarter results beat expectations and higher-value international shipments improved margins.

UPS raised its full-year 2026 revenue and adjusted profit forecasts after reporting third-quarter earnings above Wall Street expectations. The parcel-delivery company said stronger international air shipments and a continued reduction in lower-margin Amazon deliveries helped improve profitability. UPS now expects about $92.6 billion in annual revenue and adjusted earnings of roughly $7.28 per share.

Quarterly earnings beat estimates

Adjusted third-quarter profit came in at $1.69 per share, ahead of the $1.63 analysts had expected, according to LSEG data cited by Reuters. The result was still below the $1.74 earned a year earlier.

The company’s focus has shifted from maximising package volume to prioritising shipments that generate better margins.

Amazon volume is being deliberately reduced

UPS has been scaling back some of the lower-margin deliveries it handles for Amazon, its largest customer. The strategy is part of a broader restructuring designed to reduce network complexity and lift returns.

That shift means UPS is willing to sacrifice some volume in exchange for higher profitability per package.

International air freight helped

Higher-margin international air shipments were one of the main supports for the quarter. These services tend to generate more revenue per shipment than standard domestic residential deliveries.

International Package margin rose to 14.9%, slightly above the 14.8% recorded a year earlier.

US domestic margin also improved

The US Domestic Package business, which accounts for about 60% of UPS revenue, posted a margin of 7%, up from 6.4% a year earlier.

That improvement is important because the domestic network has been under pressure from wage costs, e-commerce mix changes and excess facility capacity.

$3 billion in cost savings remains the target

UPS said it remains on track to achieve about $3 billion in cost savings this year. The company has closed facilities and cut thousands of jobs as part of that plan.

The restructuring is intended to create a smaller, more flexible delivery network that can better match demand.

FedEx is following a similar playbook

Rival FedEx has also been cutting costs, simplifying its network and focusing on higher-value shipments. That makes UPS’s results an important read-through for the wider logistics industry.

Both companies are under pressure to show that margin improvement can continue even if package volumes remain uneven.

Why UPS is watched beyond logistics

Because UPS moves goods for retailers, manufacturers and consumers around the world, investors often treat its shipment trends as an early indicator of economic activity.

Stronger international demand can suggest improving trade flows, while weaker domestic volumes may signal caution in consumer spending or business inventories.

Shares rose before the market open

UPS shares gained in premarket trading after the results. Investors appeared encouraged by the higher forecast and evidence that the company’s restructuring is improving margins.

The next test will be whether UPS can maintain that progress through the peak holiday-shipping season.

The holiday season will test the new network

UPS’s restructuring has reduced capacity in parts of its network, which improves efficiency when volumes are moderate but can become a challenge during seasonal peaks. The November-December holiday period will show whether the company can handle surges without adding back too much expensive temporary capacity.

Management will also be judged on service quality. Higher margins are valuable only if delivery times and reliability remain competitive with FedEx, the US Postal Service and regional carriers.

Trade patterns matter for international growth

The strength in international air shipments comes amid shifting global supply chains and volatile tariff conditions. High-value goods such as electronics, pharmaceuticals and industrial components are more likely to move by air, making UPS sensitive to changes in manufacturing and cross-border trade.

If international demand stays strong while lower-margin domestic volume is reduced, UPS could continue improving its mix even without rapid overall package growth.
