“Practical Magic 2” opened at the top of the North American box office, bringing Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman back to the world of the Owens sisters almost 28 years after the original film.
The Warner Bros. sequel earned an estimated $30 million from 4,146 domestic theaters and another $16 million across international markets, giving it a worldwide opening of about $46 million.
Directed by Susanne Bier, the film returns to the supernatural family saga that gradually became a cult favorite after the 1998 original’s modest theatrical run. The sequel also introduces new characters played by Joey King and Maisie Williams.
The opening displaced “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” after six weekends at No. 1. The result shows the continued commercial pull of recognizable older properties, particularly when original stars return for a long-delayed sequel.
