North Korea has again rejected international calls to give up its nuclear weapons, dismissing renewed discussion of denuclearization at the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of leader Kim Jong Un, said Pyongyang’s status as a nuclear-armed state was irreversible, according to state media. Her comments followed debate at the IAEA General Conference over North Korea’s nuclear program and the continuing absence of inspectors from the country.
The statement reflects a broader shift in North Korean policy. Pyongyang increasingly presents its nuclear arsenal not as a bargaining chip, but as a permanent part of national defense strategy.
That position leaves little room for the kind of negotiations pursued in earlier years, when sanctions relief and security guarantees were discussed in exchange for steps toward denuclearization.
