Canada has formally applied to join the British-led Joint Expeditionary Force, deepening a broader push to build closer defense links with Europe.
The JEF is a rapid-response military partnership made up of 10 northern European NATO countries. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office said the United Kingdom supports Canada’s participation, which would add another NATO member to a coalition designed for fast deployments and regional security cooperation.
The application comes as Ottawa looks for ways to diversify its defense relationships and reduce dependence on the United States. Canada has also been exploring greater involvement in European defense-industrial projects, including the Global Combat Air Programme.
Membership would not replace NATO commitments. Instead, it would give Canada another framework for exercises, planning and crisis response with European partners.
