XPeng plans to offer EV and AI technology to more foreign automakers

XPeng is preparing to offer more of its electric-vehicle and AI technology to overseas automakers as it looks for new revenue beyond vehicle sales.

Chinese electric-vehicle maker XPeng is preparing to offer technology solutions to additional foreign automakers, expanding beyond its existing relationship with Volkswagen. The move is part of a broader effort to turn the company’s in-house EV and artificial-intelligence technology into a revenue stream of its own.

Reuters reported that XPeng is considering a wider range of technology partnerships as overseas manufacturers show interest in systems the company has developed for smart electric vehicles. Those assets include vehicle electronics, assisted-driving technology, AI chips and software platforms that XPeng has built for its own cars.

Technology licensing becomes a second business model

XPeng has already signaled that it wants to commercialize more of its technology outside its own vehicle lineup. In its second-quarter update, the company said it had created a strategic business-development team to work with partners in China and abroad on Turing AI chips, NGP driving systems, robotaxis and humanoid robotics.

That strategy could give traditional automakers a faster way to add advanced digital systems without developing every layer in-house. For XPeng, licensing and technical partnerships could generate capital to support expensive long-term projects in robotics, autonomous driving and physical AI.

Global expansion remains central

XPeng’s international business has grown quickly, with overseas markets contributing a rising share of revenue in 2026. The company has also expanded its vehicle lineup outside China and is positioning itself as a technology supplier as well as a carmaker.

The model is similar to a broader shift across the auto industry, where software, batteries, electronic architectures and autonomous-driving systems are becoming products that can be sold across brands. The challenge for XPeng will be balancing partnerships with rivals against the need to preserve the technology advantages that differentiate its own vehicles.
