Myanmar’s military-backed government has released U.S. citizen Adam Castillo, ending a detention that began in June after a business dispute.
Castillo, a former head of the American Chamber of Commerce in Myanmar and a former U.S. Marine, was deported after his release from Naypyitaw. Myanmar’s leadership said the decision was made in consideration of bilateral relations with the United States.
The nonprofit Global Reach, which works with families of Americans detained overseas, said it had helped secure Castillo’s release and credited pressure from U.S. officials. His family also thanked the organization and members of the administration involved in the case.
The release removes one point of tension between Washington and Myanmar, but broader relations remain strained over military rule, political repression and sanctions.
