Formula 1 is expanding its sprint format again, and one of the sport’s most traditional venues is joining the experiment.
Monaco is set to host a sprint weekend for the first time in 2027 as F1 increases the number of sprint events to a record 10. The format adds a short race and an extra qualifying session, replacing some conventional practice running.
Putting a sprint on Monaco’s narrow street circuit is notable because overtaking there is notoriously difficult. Supporters of the move argue that the compressed format creates more competitive sessions across the weekend, while critics question whether the circuit can produce enough meaningful racing to justify another sprint.
The 2027 calendar is also expected to feature sprint weekends in Bahrain, Australia, Japan and Abu Dhabi, alongside returning sprint venues. F1 says the format has helped lift audience interest on Fridays and Saturdays, making it an increasingly important part of the championship’s commercial strategy.
