Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is planning a visit to Türkiye from October 21 to 23, a trip expected to focus on trade, energy, defense and critical minerals.
Reuters reported that it will be the first bilateral visit to Türkiye by a Canadian prime minister, adding a new chapter to a relationship that has expanded through NATO and trade discussions.
Trade diversification is driving Ottawa’s agenda
Carney’s government is seeking to expand Canadian trade beyond the United States and has identified Türkiye as a market with potential in aerospace, energy, advanced technology and mining.
The two countries launched formal work toward deeper trade ties during NATO meetings earlier this year. Defense cooperation is also becoming more prominent as Canada and Türkiye take on larger roles in NATO’s eastern and northern security architecture.
Carney is expected to meet President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as well as Turkish business leaders in Ankara and Istanbul.
