Microsoft unveiled a new Surface Laptop Ultra, on-device AI models and security technology designed to prevent autonomous agents from accessing files or performing actions without permission.
The announcements position Windows as a platform for AI workloads that can run locally instead of depending entirely on cloud data centers.
AI moves from the cloud to the PC
Microsoft said some coding and reasoning models can now run directly on high-end Windows machines. The company also introduced Microsoft Execution Containers, a security layer that isolates AI agents and enforces rules set by users or IT departments.
Anthropic, OpenAI and Nvidia are among the companies supporting the new security framework. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang joined Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella at the launch event.
The Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599, underscoring the cost challenge for bringing powerful local AI computing to mainstream users.
