Trump Names Katie Zacharia as New White House Press Secretary

President Donald Trump named conservative commentator and Trump Media adviser Katie Zacharia as the new White House press secretary, replacing Karoline Leavitt.

President Donald Trump has named Katie Zacharia as the new White House press secretary, selecting a conservative commentator and communications adviser from his media company to become one of the administration’s most visible public representatives. Zacharia will replace Karoline Leavitt, who left the role in August. The appointment further tightens the connection between Trump’s political operation, conservative media ecosystem and official White House communications strategy.

Trump announced the appointment on Truth Social

The president used his own social-media platform to announce the decision, praising Zacharia as a loyal and effective communicator. The choice fits Trump’s long-standing preference for political spokespeople who are comfortable with television, social media and direct confrontation with mainstream news organizations.

Zacharia thanked the president and said she would focus on communicating the administration’s record and priorities.

She comes directly from Trump Media

Zacharia has worked as a senior communications adviser at Trump Media & Technology Group, the company behind Truth Social. That gives her experience inside the president’s personal media operation rather than a traditional government press office.

The move reflects the increasingly blurred line between political campaigns, partisan media and official communications. Trump has relied heavily on direct-to-audience platforms rather than conventional press channels.

She has previous conservative media experience

Zacharia has appeared as a commentator and worked with conservative outlets including Fox News and Newsmax. She also has experience in political communications and worked briefly as a spokesperson at the Department of Homeland Security.

That background means she enters the role with substantial camera experience, a central requirement for a press secretary who conducts televised briefings and responds rapidly to breaking news.

Karoline Leavitt left in August

Leavitt stepped down after serving as press secretary since January 2025, saying she wanted to focus more on her family. She had previously been Trump’s national press secretary during the 2024 campaign.

Leavitt is expected to join Fox News as an on-air contributor beginning in November, continuing a familiar pattern of movement between government communications roles and television networks.

The press secretary role has changed under Trump

White House press secretaries traditionally serve as the administration’s daily interface with journalists. Under Trump, the role also requires defending highly personalized policy decisions and responding to a president who frequently makes news directly through social media.

That can make message discipline difficult. A carefully prepared briefing can be overtaken within minutes by a new presidential post or unscheduled comment.

Zacharia will enter during a difficult political period

The administration is approaching the 2026 midterm elections while facing persistent voter concern over prices, energy costs and foreign conflicts. Recent polling has shown broad dissatisfaction with living costs.

The press secretary will therefore be central to the White House effort to frame the economy and defend policies on tariffs, immigration, Iran and Russia.

Foreign policy will dominate many briefings

The United States is dealing simultaneously with the Iran conflict, the Ukraine war, sanctions on the International Criminal Court and instability in the Middle East. Each issue produces rapidly changing facts and sensitive diplomatic language.

Zacharia will need to coordinate closely with the State Department, Pentagon and National Security Council while maintaining the president’s preferred political tone.

Media relations are likely to remain confrontational

Trump has repeatedly criticized major news organizations and restricted or challenged access for outlets he considers hostile. His administration has also expanded the use of alternative and partisan media in White House events.

Zacharia’s background suggests that approach is unlikely to reverse. She may place greater emphasis on friendly digital outlets, podcasts and direct social-media communication.

The job also carries legal and factual risk

Press secretaries speak on behalf of the president and government agencies. Incorrect statements can create diplomatic problems, affect markets or become evidence in litigation.

The position therefore requires balancing political advocacy with factual accuracy. That challenge becomes more difficult when policy decisions are changing quickly.

A personnel choice that signals continuity

Zacharia’s appointment does not suggest a move toward a more traditional communications model. Instead, it reinforces Trump’s preference for trusted figures who understand his media style and political base.

Her performance will be judged quickly. Daily briefings can define a press secretary’s public image within weeks, and the administration is entering a period where economic and geopolitical pressure will keep the White House briefing room at the center of national attention.
