Thousands of protesters rallied in Delhi and Mumbai on Sunday to demand the resignation of India’s Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over controversial voter-roll revisions.
Opposition groups and youth demonstrators say the changes could remove eligible voters from the rolls and unfairly benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party. The Election Commission and BJP reject those claims.
Police detained demonstrators in Delhi
Reuters witnesses reported that police detained some protesters in the capital as crowds gathered for a third consecutive day. Demonstrators breached barricades and blocked vehicles carrying detainees.
In Mumbai, opposition leaders Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray led a large march that called for the revisions to be scrapped.
Election Commission defends the revisions
The commission says the voter-list review is intended to remove invalid or duplicate entries and improve electoral accuracy.
The dispute has become a broader political confrontation over confidence in India’s election administration. Further demonstrations are planned.
