Alexandra Eala has chosen national duty over one of the WTA calendar’s mandatory stops.
The Philippine star is set to play at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games instead of the China Open, prompting the Philippine Tennis Association to request an exemption from the WTA. Eala, ranked inside the world’s top 20 after a breakthrough season, is expected to be one of the leading names in the women’s singles field in Japan.
The scheduling conflict is awkward because the China Open carries mandatory status for eligible players. PHILTA argues that the Asian Games represents a special case, particularly for athletes competing for their countries in a major multi-sport event.
Eala’s decision also underlines how quickly her profile has grown. She enters the Games not as an emerging prospect, but as a genuine medal favorite.
