A majority of U.S. voters believe the Trump administration and Congress are not taking the risks of artificial intelligence seriously enough, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.
The survey found 57% of registered voters said the administration was doing too little or nothing to address AI risks, while 54% gave a similar assessment of Congress.
Jobs dominate voter concerns
Concern about employment was especially broad. Reuters reported that 84% of respondents viewed AI as a threat to American workers, reflecting anxiety that automation could spread faster than retraining or labor-market adjustment.
Voters also expressed concern about data-center construction, electricity costs and the use of AI in military targeting. The findings cut across party lines even as the administration continues to emphasize rapid AI development as a strategic competition with China.
The poll adds political pressure for lawmakers to define national rules on AI safety, infrastructure and accountability ahead of the midterm elections.
