Israel and Gaza Mark Three Years Since October 7 Attack Amid an Unresolved War

Israelis held memorials and Palestinians mourned years of destruction as the region marked the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attack.

Israelis held memorials on Wednesday for the victims of the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack, while Palestinians in Gaza marked another year of displacement and destruction from the war that followed.

The attack killed about 1,200 people in Israel and 251 people were taken hostage. Three years later, the political and humanitarian consequences remain unresolved.

Memorials and calls for accountability

Communities near the Gaza border gathered to remember those killed and kidnapped. Some families and protesters renewed calls for an independent investigation into the failures that preceded the attack.

In Gaza, residents continue to live amid extensive destruction despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire that reduced major fighting but did not end violence. Reuters reported that more than 74,000 Palestinians have been killed during the war, according to Gaza health authorities.

The anniversary arrived as regional tensions remained high, with fresh attacks involving Yemen’s Houthis and continued instability around key Middle East shipping routes.
