Artificial intelligence safety is expected to feature in next week’s meeting between the U.S. and Chinese leaders, but both sides enter the discussion with sharply different priorities.
American officials remain focused on protecting a technological lead and limiting China’s access to advanced chips, while Beijing argues that U.S. restrictions are designed to contain Chinese technology companies. At the same time, researchers and industry leaders in both countries increasingly acknowledge that highly capable AI systems create risks that cross national borders.
The immediate challenge is less about reaching a sweeping agreement and more about creating enough trust for technical dialogue on shared safety concerns.
