The U.S. government will send a one-time $90 Medicare premium rebate to more than 20 million eligible beneficiaries in October, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
CMS said most eligible recipients will receive the payment by direct deposit on or around October 8. Some beneficiaries will receive a Treasury check later in the month.
Payment comes from Medicare Improvement Fund
The administration said the rebate will be financed through the Medicare Improvement Fund. The payment is intended to offset part of beneficiaries’ monthly Part B premium costs.
CMS said recipients do not need to apply separately if they are eligible. The agency warned beneficiaries to be cautious of scams asking for bank information or fees in exchange for the rebate.
Policy arrives weeks before midterm elections
President Donald Trump announced the payment as his administration faces pressure over household costs and health-care expenses. The timing has also drawn political scrutiny because the checks are being distributed shortly before the November congressional elections.
The rebate itself is a one-time payment and does not permanently reduce Medicare premiums.
