A large plume of black smoke was visible near King Khalid International Airport, according to Reuters footage and eyewitness reporting.
The Saudi alerts warned of a hostile aerial threat before authorities later issued an all-clear. Reuters reported that flames and smoke were seen in the airport area after booms were heard, while the Houthis later claimed attacks on what they described as sensitive sites in Riyadh.
First warning in Riyadh in the latest escalation
The Associated Press reported that the overnight alert was the first emergency warning issued in the Saudi capital during the latest escalation with the Iran-aligned Houthi movement. Saudi Arabia has faced a series of threats and strikes in recent days as fighting linked to Yemen has intensified across the region.
Saudi authorities had not immediately provided a full public accounting of damage or casualties in the first reports. The exact sequence of interceptions and impacts remained under assessment as the situation developed.
Airport area draws attention
King Khalid International Airport is Riyadh’s main international aviation hub. Images from the area showed smoke rising with airport infrastructure visible in the foreground, making the location a focal point in early coverage. Reuters later reported that smoke was seen from a fuel storage area at the airport in the aftermath of the strikes.
The incident adds to concerns about the widening geographic reach of the conflict. The Houthis have increased attacks on Saudi territory, while Saudi authorities have expanded civil-defense warnings in response.
