BT Acquires TalkTalk for £400 Million After Rival Enters Administration

BT Group bought broadband rival TalkTalk for £400 million after the debt-laden company entered administration, preserving service for millions of customers.

BT Group has acquired broadband provider TalkTalk for £400 million after the rival company entered administration, preventing an abrupt service failure for millions of customers.

TalkTalk serves about 2.5 million customers and employs roughly 900 people. The company had struggled under a debt load of about £1.5 billion.

Government accelerated scrutiny

UK authorities moved quickly because TalkTalk provides connectivity used by households, businesses and some public services. The Competition and Markets Authority has been asked to assess competition issues.

BT already provides much of TalkTalk’s underlying network infrastructure through Openreach, making it the most natural buyer once other rescue efforts failed.

Competition concerns remain

Rivals have questioned whether the deal gives BT too much influence in the broadband market. Regulators will review the transaction while continuity of service is maintained.

Former Openreach chief Clive Selley has been named to lead TalkTalk under BT ownership.
