Update — Oct. 5, 2026: Brazil’s presidential election will go to a second round after no candidate won an outright majority in Sunday’s first-round vote.
Incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro advanced to the runoff, which is scheduled for October 25.
Bolsonaro outperformed polling expectations
Flavio Bolsonaro performed more strongly than many pre-election surveys had indicated, setting up a highly competitive second round against Lula.
The result immediately drew attention from financial markets because the candidates offer sharply different approaches to fiscal policy, privatization and the role of the state.
Congressional balance also matters
Brazilian voters also chose governors and lawmakers, meaning the next president’s ability to pass legislation will depend heavily on the new congressional balance.
Trevora News will continue to distinguish campaign claims from independently verified facts as the runoff campaign develops.
