The 20th Asian Games formally opened in Nagoya on Saturday, beginning more than two weeks of competition across Japan after a preparation period marked by accommodation complaints, transport issues and last-minute logistical adjustments.
Emperor Naruhito declared the Games open during a ceremony at Paloma Mizuho Stadium, with athletes and officials from across Asia taking part. The event runs through October 4 and is spread across Aichi Prefecture and several other locations.
A huge program across 43 sports
The Games bring together athletes from 45 countries and regions across 43 sports. Organizers say the competition program includes hundreds of medal events, ranging from athletics, swimming and basketball to regional sports such as kabaddi, sepaktakraw and kurash.
Several newer disciplines are also part of the program, including esports, teqball, padel and mixed martial arts. Some team competitions began before the opening ceremony because of the crowded schedule.
The Japanese Olympic Committee describes Aichi-Nagoya 2026 as Japan’s third Asian Games, following Tokyo in 1958 and Hiroshima in 1994.
Organizers faced unusual accommodation pressures
The buildup to the Games was less smooth than organizers had hoped. With no single traditional athletes’ village, participants have been housed in a combination of hotels, temporary units and a cruise ship docked at Nagoya Port.
Reuters reported complaints from several delegations about room size, transport delays and registration problems. Organizers have said they are responding to issues as they arise and have emphasized that the unconventional housing model was partly intended to reduce the cost and long-term footprint of building a new village for a short event.
The Olympic Council of Asia acknowledged operational problems in the run-up but characterized them as manageable. The opening ceremony was designed to reset the tone around the event and shift attention toward competition.
Japan hosts a major multi-sport event with full crowds again
The Games also carry symbolic importance for Japan. Unlike the Tokyo Olympics held during the pandemic, Aichi-Nagoya 2026 is being staged with spectators, international travel and public celebrations operating normally.
That gives Japan its first opportunity in years to host a major international multi-sport event in a conventional atmosphere. Organizers have promoted the theme of regional unity, while local authorities are hoping the Games provide a tourism and visibility boost for Aichi and Nagoya.
The first full weekend of competition will quickly move the focus from logistics to medals, with events across dozens of venues. For organizers, a successful opening day would be only the beginning: the larger test will be whether transport, accommodation and venue operations remain stable as the competition schedule reaches full scale.
