Tanker Hit by Unknown Projectile in Strait of Hormuz, Crew Reported Safe

A tanker was struck by an unknown projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, causing a fire; UKMTO said the crew was safe.

A tanker was struck by an unknown projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, causing a fire aboard the vessel, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency.

UKMTO said the incident occurred at about 1750 UTC on October 1. The crew was reported safe, while the extent of the damage and any environmental impact were not immediately known.

Latest incident in a series of attacks

The warning, listed by UKMTO as incident 147-26, followed several other tanker attacks reported in the same strategic waterway in recent days. Authorities have not publicly identified who was responsible for the latest strike.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes. A significant share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas exports passes through the narrow channel connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.

Shipping risk remains elevated

Commercial traffic has continued through the strait, but operators are using additional security precautions. Some vessels have limited public transponder data during sensitive passages, while shipping companies are reviewing insurance, routing and crew-safety procedures.

The latest attack comes amid continued U.S.-Iran tensions and renewed military activity across the region. Those broader developments have increased volatility in oil and refined-fuel markets even as some Gulf export volumes recover.

UKMTO advised vessels to transit with caution and report suspicious activity. Investigations are continuing, and the agency has not attributed the incident to any government or armed group.
