Manchester City Stay Perfect With 3-2 Win, but Haaland Injury Clouds Ipswich Victory

Manchester City beat Ipswich 3-2 for a seventh straight league win, but Erling Haaland limped off after scoring twice.

Manchester City extended their perfect Premier League start to seven wins from seven with a 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town, but the result came with concern after Erling Haaland limped off late in the match. Haaland scored twice, including his 100th non-penalty Premier League goal, while Phil Foden also found the net. Ipswich stayed competitive and scored a stoppage-time penalty, but City held on to remain top of the table.

City responded after a European defeat

The match came only days after Paris Saint-Germain handed City their first meaningful defeat under manager Enzo Maresca in the Champions League. The league leaders showed little hesitation domestically.

Foden opened the scoring before Ipswich quickly responded through Daizen Maeda.

Haaland restored the lead

Haaland put City back in front before halftime with a header from Mateo Kovacic’s delivery. The goal again demonstrated how dangerous City remain when they can supply the Norwegian inside the penalty area.

Ipswich’s defensive shape had been competitive, but small mistakes were punished immediately.

The second Haaland goal created breathing room

Haaland scored again in the second half after overpowering Abdoul Ouattara and finishing low into the corner. He later had a potential hat trick ruled out because of an offside in the buildup.

The brace continued his extraordinary scoring rate in English football.

A century of non-penalty league goals

Haaland’s second strike was his 100th non-penalty Premier League goal, reached in 139 appearances. That milestone reflects both his individual finishing and the volume of chances City create.

Few modern strikers have combined speed, strength and penalty-area positioning at the same level.

The concern came at the end

Haaland went directly down the tunnel after leaving the field and appeared to be limping heavily. Maresca said the striker told him he was okay, but the club had no immediate medical update.

With important fixtures ahead, even a minor injury would be closely monitored.

City had several other injury problems

Mateo Kovacic, Matheus Nunes and Nico O’Reilly also went off hurt, while Antoine Semenyo was visibly struggling by the final whistle.

Maresca said the cluster of problems came during a demanding stretch of four games in 10 days.

Ipswich refused to disappear

Zian Flemming converted a stoppage-time penalty to make the final score 3-2. The goal did not change the result but reflected Ipswich’s willingness to keep attacking.

For promoted or lower-budget teams, avoiding passive defending against City can be difficult but necessary if they want any chance of taking points.

City are seven from seven

The victory moved Manchester City to 21 points and maintained a six-point lead over Arsenal before Sunday’s matches. It is the club’s best-ever start to a Premier League season.

Maresca also became the first manager to win his opening seven Premier League games in charge.

Off-field uncertainty remains

City are appealing a ruling involving 114 Premier League financial-rule breaches and continue to deny wrongdoing. Supporters at the Etihad loudly backed the team and protested the league’s handling of the case.

The legal uncertainty has so far had little visible effect on results.

Squad depth may now be tested

Seven straight wins create a strong cushion, but the number of players leaving Saturday’s match with physical problems could become more important than the score.

City’s ability to rotate across league and Champions League competition will depend on how quickly those players recover.

Haaland’s status is the immediate question

City can replace many positions without dramatically changing style, but Haaland remains uniquely important to the attack. His movement forces opponents deeper and creates space for midfield runners.

The club’s next medical update will therefore be watched almost as closely as the league table after another winning weekend.
