India’s Sensex Falls to 32-Month Low as Oil Surge and Foreign Selling Hit Markets

India’s Sensex fell to its lowest level in 32 months as higher oil prices, rising bond yields and record foreign outflows pressured equities.

India’s Sensex fell to its lowest level in 32 months as surging oil prices, higher global bond yields and heavy foreign selling hit the market.

The Sensex closed at 71,593.24, while the Nifty 50 fell 1.64% to an 18-month low.

Oil is a major vulnerability for India

India imports most of its crude, so higher energy prices can worsen inflation, the trade balance and the currency outlook.

Foreign investors have sold a net $4.86 billion of Indian shares over nine sessions, pushing annual outflows to a record level.

Banking and large-cap stocks were among the biggest contributors to the decline.
