The International Monetary Fund has reached a staff-level agreement with Sri Lanka on the seventh review of the country’s Extended Fund Facility program.
Completion of the review would unlock about $345 million in financing, subject to approval by the IMF’s executive board.
Reforms remain central to the program
Sri Lanka entered the IMF program after a severe sovereign-debt and balance-of-payments crisis. The government has since pursued tax, energy-pricing and debt-restructuring reforms.
The latest agreement signals continued progress but does not eliminate longer-term pressure on public finances and living costs.
Board approval is still required
Staff-level agreements are preliminary. Funds are disbursed only after the IMF board reviews the program and confirms that required policy conditions have been met.
The new tranche would provide additional external financing as Sri Lanka continues rebuilding reserves and investor confidence.
