Dutch semiconductor startup Axelera AI has unveiled its second-generation Europa processor and announced supply agreements that push the company deeper into the fast-growing market for AI inference infrastructure.

From edge devices to AI factories
Reuters reported on September 15 that Europa chips will be integrated into systems from Dell and Supermicro and are designed for enterprise-scale AI workloads. Axelera’s earlier Metis processors focused more heavily on edge applications, where AI runs closer to cameras, machines and other devices.
Chief executive Fabrizio Del Maffeo said more than 600 customers are using the company’s technology across areas including enterprise systems, security and defense. Signed deals are worth tens of millions of dollars, while the potential value of the company’s pipeline could reach as much as $1.5 billion, according to Reuters.
Europe builds an AI hardware ecosystem
Founded in Eindhoven in 2021, Axelera has raised more than $450 million. It is also participating in European Union-backed AI infrastructure projects in Italy and Luxembourg as policymakers try to expand Europe’s domestic computing capacity.
The company is competing with a growing group of European chip startups seeking alternatives in a market dominated by large U.S. semiconductor suppliers.
Next stop: data centers
Axelera is already planning a third-generation architecture called Titania aimed at data centers and supercomputers. That roadmap reflects a wider shift in the AI industry: as models are deployed at scale, demand is increasing not only for chips that train models but also for hardware optimized to run them efficiently.
