Broadcom has agreed to provide Anthropic with as much as $42 billion in financing to support one of the AI industry’s largest infrastructure buildouts, according to disclosures in Anthropic’s IPO prospectus.
The arrangement is tied to Anthropic’s plan to lease large amounts of next-generation computing capacity. Reuters reported that the financing could cover roughly one-third of a five-year compute commitment valued at about $125 billion.
Supplier and lender roles overlap
Broadcom is expected to provide multiple gigawatts of AI computing capacity beginning in 2027. The company already works with Google on custom tensor processing units, and Anthropic’s demand could make it one of Broadcom’s largest compute customers.
The structure is unusual because Broadcom is positioned both as a technology supplier and a financier. That creates a deeper commercial relationship but also raises questions about pricing, hardware access and how much dependence Anthropic could develop on a single infrastructure partner.
AI infrastructure spending keeps expanding
The deal illustrates how quickly capital requirements are rising for leading AI companies. Training and operating frontier models increasingly depends on multibillion-dollar commitments for chips, data centers, power and networking.
Anthropic said some financing obligations are secured by restricted cash and warned in its filing that defaults could accelerate repayment obligations. Broadcom, meanwhile, has projected rapid growth in AI-related chip revenue over the next two fiscal years.
