Bayer plans to invest $2.2 billion in a new pharmaceutical manufacturing site in New Albany, Ohio, one of the German group’s largest recent production commitments in the United States.
The facility is intended to expand Bayer’s U.S. manufacturing capacity as the company seeks to grow its pharmaceutical business and bring more production closer to one of its largest markets.
Manufacturing becomes a strategic priority
Large drugmakers are investing more heavily in U.S. facilities as governments emphasize supply-chain resilience and domestic production. Pharmaceutical manufacturing projects also require long lead times because plants must meet strict regulatory and quality standards.
Bayer has been working to strengthen its drug pipeline while managing legal liabilities and pressure in other parts of the group. A new U.S. site gives the company additional flexibility for future product launches.
Investment will unfold over several years
The $2.2 billion figure represents the planned capital commitment rather than immediate spending. Construction, equipment installation and regulatory validation typically occur in phases before a plant reaches commercial production.
The company has not indicated that the Ohio facility will replace existing sites. Instead, the project is positioned as an expansion of U.S. capacity.
