AstraZeneca Invests $2 Billion in Summit Therapeutics in Cancer Drug Partnership

AstraZeneca will invest $2 billion in Summit Therapeutics and begin clinical collaboration around ivonescimab and AstraZeneca cancer medicines.

AstraZeneca has agreed to invest $2 billion in Summit Therapeutics as part of a broad clinical collaboration focused on combining the companies’ cancer treatments.

The British drugmaker said it will purchase newly issued preferred shares that would give it rights equivalent to about 12% of Summit Therapeutics’ outstanding common stock, or roughly 10.6% on a fully diluted basis. The transaction is expected to close within a week, subject to customary conditions.

Ivonescimab will be tested with AstraZeneca therapies

The partnership will initially evaluate Summit’s ivonescimab with AstraZeneca’s sonesitatug vedotin, an antibody-drug conjugate targeting CLDN18.2, in gastrointestinal cancers. The companies also plan a wider clinical program pairing ivonescimab with other medicines in AstraZeneca’s oncology portfolio.

Ivonescimab is a bispecific antibody designed to target both PD-1 and VEGF, two pathways involved in cancer’s ability to evade the immune system and support tumor growth. The drug has become one of Summit’s most closely watched assets.

Investment gives AstraZeneca a strategic foothold

AstraZeneca said it will buy preferred shares convertible at the equivalent of $18.36 per Summit common share. Reuters reported that the conversion price represented an 18.6% premium to Summit’s closing share price before the announcement.

The investment gives AstraZeneca exposure to ivonescimab without an outright acquisition while allowing both companies to retain their own development and commercial rights. The structure also gives the drugmaker an opportunity to test its antibody-drug conjugate portfolio alongside a treatment that could compete in a fast-growing area of oncology.

Summit shares rose sharply in extended trading after the deal was announced, reflecting investor interest in the partnership and the size of AstraZeneca’s commitment.
