Anthropic has set up a physical biology laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area, moving part of its life-sciences strategy beyond computer simulations and into real-world experiments.
The company, best known for its Claude artificial-intelligence models, confirmed the wet lab in an interview reported by Reuters. Anthropic says the facility is intended to help test biological work in conditions that software alone cannot reproduce.
From AI models to laboratory work
Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic’s head of life sciences, said physical experiments remain an essential final test in biology. The company is conducting some work in its own facilities while also working with outside partners.
Anthropic has been expanding Claude’s use in scientific research, including tools designed to assist with biological analysis and molecular modeling. The lab gives the company a way to connect those digital capabilities with experimental workflows.
The company says its goal is not to become a conventional drugmaker running clinical trials. Instead, it is positioning its AI systems as research tools that could help scientists investigate difficult targets, including rare diseases and conditions that have historically been challenging for drug development.
Why the move is important
AI companies have spent years arguing that advanced models could accelerate science. A physical lab makes that claim more concrete because it introduces a feedback loop: models can suggest or analyze experiments, and real-world results can then test whether the computational ideas hold up.
The move also raises safety questions. Powerful biological tools can have legitimate research value while also creating concerns about misuse. Anthropic has frequently highlighted AI safety and says human oversight remains part of its life-sciences work.
The broader trend is clear: frontier AI companies are moving beyond chatbots and coding assistants toward specialized systems that interact with scientific workflows, instruments and domain experts.
